Victim of Gehrig’s Disease Taken Off Respirator, Dies

A victim of Lou Gehrig’s disease was taken off a respirator at her own request and died less than an hour later, a family member said Saturday.

Thelma Stussy, 51, of Philadelphia, died late Friday. She had asked her family to go to court to force Neumann Medical Center to remove her from the respirator that enabled her to breathe.

A judge went to her bedside and determined, through Stussy’s blinks and slight head shakes, that she was aware of the consequences of her decision.
