Ireland Begins Tough No-Smoking Campaign

Reuters

The Irish launched a crackdown on smokers Tuesday with offenders fined $150 if they break new anti-smoking laws.

Smoking has been banned in theaters, trains, buses, air and ferry ports, libraries and schools. Restaurants have been ordered to set up no-smoking areas.

The proportion of Irish smokers has dropped from 45% of the population 15 years ago to about 27% today, but health authorities are concerned that the rate of decline has slowed.
