WORLD : Romania Acts to Protect Vote

BUCHAREST, Romania — The provisional government today banned demonstrations and the sale of alcohol and will tighten security during the 48-hour period leading up to the May 20 elections.
Interim Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Draganescu also announced that polling stations would be patrolled by police and soldiers to guard against violence.
Interim President Ion Iliescu, a former communist, is favored to become Romania’s first democratically elected president in four decades.
