WORLD : S. Africa to Integrate Hospitals

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South Africa’s white government announced plans today to abolish decades of racial segregation in state hospitals.
Anti-apartheid doctors immediately welcomed the move, the latest in a series of proposed reforms announced this month by President Frederik W. de Klerk’s 8-month-old white government.
“The government has decided that the available capacity of beds in all hospitals must be accessible to all persons and that a model be designed to manage this in an orderly fashion,” Health Minister Rina Venter told Parliament.
Venter announced that state health services would be restructured on the basis of equality and accessibility to ensure proper treatment for the black majority.
