TENNIS / NCAA MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS : Four Pac-10 Teams in Quarterfinals

INDIAN WELLS — Two-time defending NCAA men’s champion Stanford led a Pacific 10 march that included USC, UCLA and California into the tournament quarterfinals Saturday, breezing past Oklahoma State, 5-1, at Hyatt Grand Champions Resort.

Top-ranked Tennessee improved its record to 32-0 by beating UC Irvine, 5-2, after falling behind 2-0 when Trevor Kronemann and Richard Lubner won singles matches.

The Volunteers play Miami (Fla.) in today’s quarterfinals. The Hurricanes beat No. 15 Arizona State, 5-1.

Third-ranked Stanford will meet No. 7 Texas today after winning all but one singles match in beating Oklahoma State, 5-1. Second-ranked Jonathan Stark lost to 62nd-ranked Eric Fahnestock, 6-2, 6-2. It was Stark’s first match since mid-April, when he suffered a stress fracture in his left foot.

Texas (22-1) won its 21st consecutive match, upsetting No. 5 Pepperdine (24-6), 5-3.

“We looked upon this match as a bit of a mission,” Texas Coach Dave Snyder said. “We think of ourselves as the Rodney Dangerfield of tennis. But beating a California team in California should help that.”

Second-ranked UCLA (26-3) also advanced easily, beating San Diego, 5-1, in Coach Glenn Bassett’s 600th career match and 519th career victory.

San Diego’s only win was by No. 6 Jose-Luis Noriega, who beat Jason Netter, 6-3, 6-3, in the feature singles match.

UCLA will meet California, which beat LSU, 5-3, in a match that lasted 6 1/2 hours.

Eighth-ranked USC (21-7) avenged an earlier loss, beating South Carolina (17-9), 5-2. Fourth ranked Byron Black of USC beat No. 11 Stephane Simian in the top singles match, 6-4, 7-5.

The Trojans meet fourth-ranked Georgia (21-4), which beat No. 23 Northwestern, 5-2. Northwestern (19-6) was playing in its first NCAA men’s tournament.
