Board Votes to Help Defense Workers

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to create a “Defense Industry Worker Re-employment Center” to coordinate private and public resources to help displaced workers.
The board asked county officials to make recommendations for the center’s creation and to report back in 30 days.
The impetus for the motion, sponsored by Supervisor Ed Edelman, was the recent announcement that thousands of aerospace workers employed in Los Angeles County by Lockheed Corp. and Northrop Corp. will lose their jobs in coming years because of downturns in the defense contracting business.
