Australian Population Surpasses 17 Million

CANBERRA — Australia’s population has topped 17 million for the first time. The Bureau of Statistics said Friday that preliminary data showed it had taken three years and 10 months for the population to rise from 16 million to the 17 million estimated in March.
There were fewer than 13 million people in Australia 10 years ago.
