SANTA CLARA — If the San Francisco Giants want to change their location, they will have to change their name as well.
The Santa Clara City Council approved a proposal to develop a financial package which would bring the Giants to their city--but there are some strings attached.
One of the stickiest of the 16 provisions was that the team become the Santa Clara Giants.
“I want it understood that the name will be changed,” said Councilwoman Sue Lasher. “If they moved to Denver, they would change their name; if they move to Santa Clara they should do the same.”
The plans include a new outdoor stadium for the team, and supporters in the audience Tuesday night felt strongly about the name change.
