LONDON — The Soviet destroyer Bezuprechny fired a 21-gun salute today to herald its arrival in Portsmouth, where it was the first Soviet warship to call in 14 years.
“Even recently, I could hardly imagine myself conducting a press conference in Portsmouth, the main naval base of the Royal Navy, but time changes everything,” Rear Adm. Vasily Yeremin, northern fleet squadron commander, told reporters.
