TENNIS ROUNDUP : Agenor Surprises Gomez in Swiss Open

GSTAAD, Switzerland — French Open champion Andres Gomez of Ecuador squandered five match points in the second set and was ousted by Ronald Agenor of Haiti, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the second round of the Swiss Open today.

Agenor, unseeded in this tournament, is ranked 45th in the world; Gomez is ranked fourth.

Gomez had two match points at 5-3 in the second set and three more at 5-4.

American Jim Courier, the No. 5 seed, beat Austria’s Horst Skoff, 6-3, 6-3.

Seventh seed Carl Uwe Steeb of West Germany, the defending champion, struggled to beat Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Stefan Edberg, three days after winning the Wimbledon championship, had to struggle today to beat American Tommy Ho, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, in the first round of the Gunze World tennis tournament at Osaka, Japan.

The top-seeded Swede battled two hours against Ho, the world’s 624th-ranked player from Winter Haven, Fla., on the artificial surface at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium.

Jaime Yzaga of Peru beat Jason Stoltenberg of Australia in one hour, 6-1, 6-3.

Yzaga hit only 35.7% of his first serves in the second set but Stoltenberg committed 48 unforced errors in the match.

In women’s singles, top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina needed just 47 minutes to trounce Angelica Gavaldon of the United States, 6-0, 6-1.

Rachel McQuillan of Australia rallied to upset second-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez of the United States, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Fernandez, ranked eighth among the world’s women players, was returning to action after skipping Wimbledon because of an ankle injury.

“I made too many errors. I hope my injury will recover by the U.S. Open,” said Fernandez, who committed 63 unforced errors against McQuillan, ranked 47th.
