U.S. Role in Building Iraqi War Machine

Caspar Weinberger’s “Column Right” (Commentary, Aug. 9) contains some faulty reasoning concerning proposed defense budget cuts.
He mentions that the B-2 and Stealth fighters would have “enormous potential because of Iraq’s weak air defenses.” Why do we need the Stealth technology against weak Iraqi defenses? Can’t our F-series fighters handle the job?
He also feels that eliminating chemical weapon production by the U.S. would reduce our “deterrent capability” against Iraq. Apparently, the millions of bullets, bombs and missiles already at our disposal don’t appear to have deterrent potential to Weinberger.
Expensive weapons programs haven’t reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Perhaps if resources were reallocated to, say, alternative energy development, then warring Arab countries wouldn’t affect our economy so severely.
