Balloon Pilot to Be Charged in Fatal Crash

SYDNEY, Australia — A South African-born balloon pilot will be charged with the manslaughter of 13 people who died last year in the world’s worst hot-air balloon accident, Australian police said Friday.
Michael Sanby, 36, was flying a hot-air balloon that collided with one of three other balloons packed with tourists watching a desert sunrise near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory on Aug. 13, 1989.
Sanby was arrested Thursday at Perth airport as he tried to board a flight to Zimbabwe.
