Liver Transplant Pioneer Undergoes Heart Surgery

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The doctor who performed the world’s first successful liver transplant underwent heart surgery Friday at the hospital where he has performed hundreds of transplants. Thomas E. Starzl, 64, was reported in stable condition after undergoing the coronary artery bypass operation at Presbyterian University Hospital.
