Chester Zardis; New Orleans Jazz Band Bass Player

Chester Zardis, 90, one of the original slap-style string bass players with traditional New Orleans jazz bands. Zardis made his first recording in 1937. He was associated with various Preservation Hall bands that toured the world. In later years, he formed his own band. “Zardis,” a documentary based on his life, was completed this year. His last performance was July 16 at Preservation Hall. In New Orleans on Aug. 14.
