Lakewood : Congressman to Get Letter Complaining of Low Census

Disturbed that U.S. Census Bureau figures show a drop in Lakewood population, the City Council plans to send a letter of protest to Rep. Glenn M. Anderson (D-San Pedro).
The city contends that the bureau failed to count at least 2,974 people, which could cost Lakewood as much as $200,000 annually in state funds that are distributed on the basis of census figures, said Nancy Hicks, the city’s finance director.
The letter will cite population figures collected by the city and will complain of “shoddy workmanship.” The Census Bureau missed 254 households and failed to check 715 more that were thought to be vacant, said Charles Ebner, director of community development.
