THE SIDELINES : U.S. Takes Lead in Women’s Golf

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand — Vicki Goetze of Hull, Ga., and Pat Hurst of San Leandro, Calif., had rounds of even-par 74 today for a 148 total as the United States took a two-stroke lead after the first round of the women’s world amateur golf championship.
The top two scores from the three-member teams count in the team total in the four-day competition for the Espirito Santo trophy. Karen Noble of Brookside, N.J., the third American player, had a 77 on the 6,162-yard, par-74 Russley course.
Denmark and Germany were tied for second at 150.
The United States has won the Espirito Santo trophy 10 of the previous 13 times it has been contested.
