P.M. BRIEFING : Cable TV Bill Dead for ‘90: Gore

WASHINGTON — A bill that would bring back federal regulation of cable television rates and service is dead for the present, its chief Senate sponsor said today.
“This legislation is dead for this year,” Sen. Albert Gore (D-Tenn.) said in a Senate speech. Congress is expected to adjourn sometime next week until January.
Gore said too many senators, at the urging of the Administration, are ready to delay action on the bill.
Senate rules allow a few senators to block action on bills for several days, a powerful weapon in the last days of a session. Gore said White House Chief of Staff John H. Sununu had called several Republican senators urging them to block action on the bill.
