NATION : 2 Vietnam Soldiers Laid to Rest

From Times Wire Services

The remains of two American soldiers killed in the last major assault of the Vietnam War were laid to rest today, 19 years after their helicopter was shot down.

Capt. Keith A. Brandt, Bellingham, Wash., and Lt. Alan B. Boffman, Norfolk, Va., crashed March 18, 1971, while attempting to save 88 South Vietnamese infantrymen stranded in a thrust into Laos.

“It’s been a long time,” Chaplain Lt. Col. John Morrison said at Arlington National Cemetery. “Their children were infants when they died.”

Vietnam veterans hailed the return of the remains to the United States in July as the result of the first joint U.S.-Laotian search for Americans missing in action.
