Quake Shakes Eastern Canada, N.Y., Vermont

OTTAWA — A moderate earthquake shook eastern Canada and northern New York and Vermont early today, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake struck the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Montreal, and was felt in the New York cities of Syracuse, Albany, Rochester and Buffalo, as well as Montpelier and Burlington in Vermont, according to U.S. and Canadian officials.

The quake, which struck just after 3 a.m., had a magnitude of 5.2, said Maurice Lamontagne, a seismologist with the Geophysics Division of Energy Mines and Resources in Ottawa.

There were no initial reports of damage, but an Ottawa resident said houses rattled during the tremor, which lasted about 10 seconds. A Montreal resident said the quake felt mild.
