Germany’s revamped Communist Party, its reform image damaged by a financial scandal, resolved to open its books to public scrutiny and jettison assets worth billions of dollars. Facing united Germany’s first general elections in December, the renamed Democratic Socialist Party said it will divest all property holdings from the Communist era that are not needed for the party’s immediate political work. Two party aides last week were arrested for spiriting $70 million in frozen party funds to accounts in Moscow to evade possible expropriation.
