Robertson Political Spending Challenged

WASHINGTON — Democrats filed a complaint Monday with the Federal Election Commission, alleging that a group headed by broadcaster Pat Robertson had failed to report spending against Democratic House candidates.

The complaint alleged that Robertson’s Christian Coalition has been buying radio spots and sending mail opposing Democratic candidates in at least four states.

The papers filed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee focused on the races of incumbent Reps. Ben Jones of Georgia, Pat Williams of Montana, Richard H. Stallings of Idaho and Jolene Unsoeld of Washington.

Groups that spend money to promote or defeat candidates without coordinating with the candidates’ own campaigns are allowed unlimited spending but must register with the FEC and report their activities and funding sources.
