Some Senators Bet Big on Sure Things

WASHINGTON — In Georgia, Sen. Sam Nunn, a Democrat, spent nearly $1.2 million in a reelection campaign featuring no opponent.
Not surprisingly, Nunn won a fourth term Tuesday.
Nunn’s apparent strategy of spending freely to ward off potential future challengers also was employed by Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.), who spent $1 million, and Sen. David Pryor (D-Ark.), who spent $536,000.
In fact, the 1990 elections may be remembered not only for a handful of tough Senate and gubernatorial contests, but the extraordinary number of safe incumbents who spent millions of dollars in non-competitive races.
