Islanders Take Control Early to Beat Jets, 3-1

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The New York Islanders limited the Winnipeg Jets to one even-strength shot on goal in the first period en route to a 3-1 victory Thursday night.

The Islanders took control early, scoring on a goal by Patrick Flatley 9:11 into the game and on a wrist shot by Brad Dalgarno in the second period .

Dalgarno, who rejoined the Islanders after sitting out last season, took a pass from Ray Ferraro and scored his first goal of the season.

Winnipeg cut the Islanders’ lead to 2-1 at 7:38 of the second period on a goal by Danton Cole, who tapped in the puck after Ed Olczyk dug out a rebound in front of the Islanders’ Glenn Healy.

The Islanders were scoreless in six power-play opportunities but got a shorthanded goal in the third period from Jeff Norton. It was his first of the season.

The Jets wasted eight power-play chances but wound up outshooting the Islanders, 26-24.

The victory was the Islanders’ sixth in their past nine games and evened their home record at 5-5-0. The Jets lost for the fifth time in six games.
