BEETHOVEN: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 6. Chicago Symphony conducted by Fritz Reiner. RCA Victor Gold Seal 60002-2-RG. Upon first hearing, these performances seem remarkable chiefly for Reiner’s iron-fisted control, precision of execution and resolute denial of emotion. After repeated listenings, one begins to appreciate some of Reiner’s subtleties: elegant textures with a strong woodwind presence, delicate articulations, the restrained sense of drama which guides phrases gracefully forward. There are a few oddities to be sure: Reiner takes a very slow tempo for the “Scene by the Brook” (it lasts over 14 minutes) and honors none of Beethoven’s repeats (turning the scherzo into a mere interlude). Still, this is highly civilized, ingratiating music making.
