A man whom San Diego police described as well-dressed and driving a late-model car robbed a Western Federal Savings and Loan branch of $35,450 in traveler’s checks, police reported Thursday.

Shortly before 10 a.m., a man entered the savings and loan in the 1000 block of Camino del Rio South, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Witnesses said the man was wearing a blue sport coat, tan pants, and gold-rimmed glasses, and carrying a small, brown and maroon brief case.

He told the teller he wanted to buy some traveler’s checks, and, when the teller brought a box containing the checks, he said, “This is a robbery. Give me the checks,” Robinson said. No weapon was seen.

The man escaped in a teal green, four-door, 1989 or 1990 Honda Accord, Robinson said.
