SIDELINES : Lewis U Coach Is Suspended

From Times Wire Services

Lewis University officials suspended basketball Coach Al Davis for threatening to revoke the scholarships of two players taking part in a minority student protest, officials said.

About 200 students agreed to end a two-day protest and sleep-in Wednesday after two hours of negotiations with school administrators and the announcement of the two-day suspension.

The players threatened with losing their scholarships were junior Randy Clay and freshman Kalind Haynes, both of Chicago, the students said.

Protests began in the southwest Chicago suburb on Monday. The students are demanding that the Christian Brothers school hire more minority faculty members, offer cultural awareness courses and hire minority students as dormitory supervisors.
