WORLD : S. Africa Tells Low Black Grades

Black students had the worst examination results ever recorded, South Africa’s top education official announced today, blaming teacher strikes and classroom protests against segregated education.

Preliminary figures showed only 36.4% of blacks passed the exam required to graduate, compared with 97% of whites, said Education and Development Aid Minister Stoffel van der Merwe. “The year 1990 has been a traumatic time for black education,” he said.
