U.S. OKs Pan Am Route Sale to United: The Transportation Department approved the sale of Pan Am Corp.’s prize London routes to UAL Corp.’s United Airlines, pending approval by the British government. Talks with British authorities over the sale--considered crucial to Pan Am’s survival--have broken down, however. The 63-year-old Pan Am, facing huge debts and higher fuel costs, filed for bankruptcy protection Jan. 8.
