THAILAND: Military coup leaders ordered lower oil prices and reductions in income tax rates in an apparent effort to win popular support for their Feb. 23 takeover. A military spokesman announced that the coup group, which calls itself the National Peacekeeping Council, ordered the Commerce Ministry to lower the prices of oil products as quickly as possible. The military regime said the rise in prices ordered last year by the ousted government of Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan had triggered hikes in the cost of living.
