Pentagon Purchasing Special Chemical Suits

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has ordered 550,000 chemical-protection suits to help build up stockpiles depleted by the Persian Gulf War.
The $53.5-million contract went to Propper International of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Deliveries, expected to begin in November, will continue through 1993.
The Defense Department has bought 1.3 million of the suits since the Gulf buildup began.
An undetermined number of the suits were used in chemical warfare training and drills, as military strategists planned for the possibility that Iraq could unleash chemical weapons against allied troops.
