Down to Defeat: A proposal to prohibit commercials on movie screens in Maryland has been defeated in the Economic Matters Committee of the Maryland General Assembly. A spokesperson for Rep. Paul G. Pinsky, who had introduced the bill, said the committee chairman urged rejection and all 22 members concurred. Pinksy had offered the law as a way of curbing what he called a growing use of “intrusive and obnoxious” ads in theaters. Maryland theater owners claimed the law would be an intrusion into private business.
