Sweetwater’s Inzunza Throws Perfect Game Against Mar Vista

NATIONAL CITY — Lorenzo Inzunza of Sweetwater hurled the county’s third perfect game of the year, shutting down Mar Vista, 2-0, in a Metro Conference baseball game Wednesday at Sweetwater.

Inzunza, a 5-foot-11 junior right-hander, threw 77 pitches and struck out six in a game that lasted only 1 hour 15 minutes.

“He was super,” Sweetwater Coach Jim Mann said. “They didn’t get anything close to a hit. They tried to bunt three or four times, but there were no line drives or any hard-hit balls.”

It was Inzunza’s first no-hitter, but he’s come close a couple of times recently. April 24, Inzunza had a three-hitter. Two weeks before that, he had a no-hitter with two outs in the sixth, but Southwest then got three consecutive hits--all with the count 0-2.

Last Friday, Sweetwater’s Erick Gallardo also took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, before losing it and then the game, 2-1, to Montgomery.

Inzunza, a hard-luck pitcher most of the season, ran his record to 4-5.

“He’s only had about three bad innings all year,” Mann said.

Rick Quinones (3-4) pitched well for Mar Vista, but three of the four hits he allowed were doubles.

Dorian Guerrero doubled in a run in the third inning, and Fernando Rodriquez doubled in Gilbert Benitez, who had also doubled, in the sixth.

Sweetwater improved to 7-9-1, 4-6. Mar Vista fell to 8-9-1, 3-7.
