Museum Fire Spares Imelda Marcos’ Shoes

A fire broke out in a museum at the Philippine presidential palace Sunday, gutting a souvenir shop but sparing the 2,000 pairs of shoes amassed by Imelda Marcos, officials said.

“Imelda’s shoes are intact,” said Eva Toledo, assistant executive director of the palace museum where the fire broke out. The collection includes a pair of battery-powered shoes that light up for disco dancing.

Toledo, ruling out sabotage, said the fire was apparently caused by a faulty air-conditioning unit inside a storeroom.

The museum was designed to expose the extravagant lifestyle of the Marcoses.
