Gold Mining Companies Discuss Merger: Newmont Mining Corp., North America’s No. 1 gold producer, said it is negotiating to merge with American Barrick Resources Corp. in a move that would create the world’s second-biggest gold mining company. Both companies said the merger, if approved by their boards, would be a stock swap transaction in which 1.8 shares of American Barrick, a large U.S. and Canadian gold producer, would be exchanged for each share of Newmont Mining.
