SANTA PAULA : School District Cuts Jobs, Programs

The Santa Paula Union High School District board has voted to slash an additional $260,000 from instructional programs and jobs for next year.
At a meeting Wednesday, the board cut five maintenance and clerical jobs to save nearly $80,000. They also decided not to pay golf and freshman basketball head coaches, and two assistant coaches in football and one in track.
The cuts were part of $540,000 in budget reductions for the next school year. District officials, who are suffering from a $232,000 shortfall of funds from the state, had already eliminated six teaching positions and one counseling job for next year.
Books and supplies were cut by $64,000, a 61% reduction. In addition, the trustees eliminated a computer lab instructional aide and suspended the lab’s operation for one year.
The final budget will be approved June 28.
