Democrats’ Future

If the Democratic Party follows Gov. Clinton’s example of punishing school dropouts by denying them drivers’ licenses as a new approach to democratic governance then we Dems are, indeed, in deep trouble.

The school dropout is probably a black or Latino, poor, from a broken family, a gang member and/or, from all of his childhood experiences, screwed up. A job is his only salvation and Clinton would take away one of his important qualifications for employment--the license to drive.

Instead, the Democratic Party should be addressing the fundamental, tangled and difficult issue of why kids drop out and how we can prevent that. Which means addressing the entire issue of broken families, poverty, crime, ghettos and barrios, employment and schools that work. Republicans won’t do it. This is Democratic work. Somebody has to give a damn. And about time too!
