Bomb in Peruvian Market Injures 22

Suspected Maoist Shining Path guerrillas Saturday lobbed a bomb into a marketplace in the Andean city of Ayacucho, injuring 22 people on the eve of municipal elections to be held in many Peruvian towns, witnesses said.

The Shining Path has declared an “armed strike” in several provinces in a bid to disrupt the voting.

Several children were among the injured, and two people were in serious condition, witnesses said.
