The Pillory Reappears in Poland

Reuters

Crime-busting Poles have revived the medieval pillory in Lodz, their second biggest city, the official PAP news agency reported Saturday.

Citizens will be allowed to use the device to hold wrongdoers until police arrive.

In the Middle Ages, wrongdoers manacled to a pillory were jeered and pelted with rotten fruit--or worse--by angry crowds.

PAP described the new pillory as “a post, several yards high, adorned with shackles.” It said the pillory will be officially unveiled next week amid such festivities as a pillory ball, a “catch the thief” pageant and a soccer match between cops and robbers.

“Prisoners from the local jail will be pitted against a team of constables in the match,” PAP said.
