California IN BRIEF : CARUTHERS : 4 Farm Workers Die in Car Crash

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A collision between a car and a truck hauling grapes killed four farm workers, the California Highway Patrol reported. It was the second multiple-fatality traffic accident in the central San Joaquin Valley this week. On Labor Day, seven people died in a head-on accident on California 198 west of Visalia. All the victims in Friday’s accident were in the car, which Officer Laurie Johnson said ran a stop sign at Mountain View and Marks avenues about a mile north of Caruthers in southern Fresno County. Their names were unavailable. The truck driver, Charles Widlund, 45, suffered a broken left leg in the 6:30 a.m. accident. Johnson said Widlund credited his seat belt with saving his life because his door flew open as his truck skidded down the pavement after the crash.
