California IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Controversial Editor of Paper Resigns

Joseph Farah, the editor who shifted the Sacramento Union from a mainstream conservative newspaper into one further to the right, has resigned effectively immediately. Farah had been editor of California’s oldest daily newspaper for 15 months. He had directed the paper to give more aggressive coverage of conservative activities and increased the emphasis on anti-abortion and pro-family issues. The paper, which reported a circulation of 72,000 before his appointment as editor in July, 1990, reported a circulation of 52,000 last week. Ken Harvey, a 25-year veteran of the Union and managing editor for the last three years, was named interim editor.
