SPORTSCOPE : Toro Women Will Attempt to End Losing Streak

The Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s basketball team will attempt to end a two-game losing streak when it plays host to UC Davis in a nonconference game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Toro Gym.
The Toros, who were defeated 71-47 Tuesday by NCAA Division I opponent Pepperdine, are 1-2. They opened the season by defeating San Francisco State, 63-37, in the first round of the Fresno Pacific tournament last week, but they lost to Fresno Pacific, 66-41, in the final.
Davis finished 26-5 and reached the NCAA Division II West Region final last season. The team opened with a 64-51 victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last week.
Dominguez Hills has been led by 6-foot-1 senior forward Cheri Bullet, who is averaging 13.5 points, 11 rebounds and 5.5 steals, and 5-4 junior guard LaNell Ellison, a transfer from Santa Rosa Community College, who is averaging 11.5 points. Both players made the all-tournament team at the Fresno tournament.
Bullet is one of four starters returning from a squad that finished 15-11 last season. The others are 6-foot center Dionne Vanlandingham, 5-8 swingman Denise Slater and 5-7 guard Karee Bonde.
On Wednesday, Dominguez Hills travels to Irvine to play Christ College at 7:30 p.m. Christ is regarded as one of the top teams in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics District 3.
The Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team will open a three-game trip when it travels to San Diego to play Point Loma Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Toros (1-2) will continue the trip with games at Northern Colorado on Dec. 6 and Denver on Dec. 7.
Point Loma lost to Christian Heritage in its season opener last week. The Crusaders are led by All-NAIA District 3 swingman Rusty Fallin, who averaged 17.8 points last season, and guard Mark Bulgin.
Dominguez Hills opened its season in Northern California last week. The Toros defeated Cal State Hayward, 85-76, and lost to Sonoma State, 61-53.
On Tuesday, the Toros lost to Pepperdine, 83-54.
Three South Bay residents have been named among the nation’s top 10 bowlers in the senior division by the Wisconsin-based Young American Bowling Alliance.
The bowlers are Darryl Law, 20, of Gardena; Brandi Corbin, 20, of Torrance and Kellie Estrada, 21, of Wilmington. The senior division includes bowlers from 19 to 21.
