Block Asks Repeal of Rule Barring His Reelection

Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block has asked the Board of Supervisors to repeal a 1986 resolution that the sheriff said would prevent him from seeking reelection in 1994 if he decides to run.
The resolution sets a mandatory retirement age of 70 for elected law enforcement officials. Block is 67.
“While I have not yet decided whether I will seek reelection,” Block said in a letter due to come before the supervisors on Tuesday, “it is clear that I cannot be reelected, and the electorate cannot be given the opportunity to consider my candidacy, without the Board of Supervisors repealing its earlier resolution.”
