COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Iowa Stops Jackson and Ohio State

Iowa’s James Moses scored 21 points, but it was his defensive work on Ohio State’s Jim Jackson that was the difference as the Hawkeyes upset the No. 6 Buckeyes, 92-86, Tuesday night in a Big Ten game at Iowa City.

Moses guarded the 6-foot-6 star much of the time and helped hold him to a career-low seven points.

Ohio State, 17-4 overall and 9-2 in the Big Ten, and Indiana now share first place in the conference. They tied for the title last season.

Jackson, the Big Ten’s leading scorer with a 23.8 average, made only two of 10 shots. His previous low had been eight points--against La Salle as a freshman two years ago and Miami of Ohio last season.

This season, Jackson’s low had been 16 points in a 74-72 victory at Illinois on Jan. 30.

“A lot of reporters were talking to all of us before the game about what a great player Jimmy Jackson is,” Moses said. “I just said I was going to try to play the best of my game and bring it up to him.

“He just had a bad game.”

Iowa (15-7, 7-5) shot 60% on the way to a 46-38 halftime lead, outscored Ohio State, 13-3, to start the second half, then relied on steady free-throw shooting to turn back an Ohio State rally.

Georgia 87, No. 10 Arkansas 78--Litterial Green scored 30 points and led a second-half surge that powered the Bulldogs in a Southeastern Conference upset at Athens, Ga.

Arlando Bennett added a personal-best 18 points and Kendall Rhine 16 points for Georgia (12-10, 5-6). The SEC West-leading Razorbacks (19-6, 8-3), got 24 points and nine rebounds from Todd Day.

Clemson 68, No. 16 Florida State 67--Chris Whitney scored 21 points, including five three-point baskets, and freshman Sharone Wright made a free throw with 21 seconds left in an Atlantic Coast Conference upset of the Seminoles at Clemson, S.C.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Florida State (18-7, 10-5).

The Tigers (13-9, 3-8) had lost three in a row.

The score was tied, 34-34, at halftime, but Whitney made two three-pointers early in the second half to give the Tigers a 40-36 lead with 17:11 left.

The Seminoles came back to tie the score, 43-43, with 13:38 remaining on a basket by Sam Cassell, who led Florida State with 21 points. But Clemson followed with a 9-2 run that featured a pair of inside baskets by freshman Devin Gray and another three-pointer by Whitney that gave the Tigers a 52-45 lead.

OTHER GAMES

Greg Woodard scored 25 points and Ron Wilson added 12 as Villanova defeated Miami, 74-50, in a Big East game at Philadelphia. . . . Corey Floyd led five teammates in double figures with 14 points to spark Providence to a 74-61 Big East victory over Boston College at Providence. . . . Brooks Boyer came off the bench to score a three-point basket at South Bend, Ind. that helped Notre Dame beat Marquette, 60-53. LaPhonso Ellis led the Irish with 19 points. . . . Sam Mack and Derrick Smith each scored 20 points as Houston eased past Rice, 86-83, in a Southwest Conference at Houston.
