BELL : Low-Income Housing for Seniors to Be Built

The first housing complex for low-income senior citizens in Bell will be built with nearly $5 million in federal funds, city officials said this week.
The money will be funneled through the National Council on Senior Citizens, a nonprofit organization based in Washington. The city will contribute about $650,000 from community redevelopment coffers to help finance the project, officials said.
Although two-thirds of the city’s residents are tenants facing escalating rents, Bell is the only city in the southeast area that does not have a senior housing project.
The 71-unit development will be built on a half-acre lot at Florence Avenue near Atlantic Avenue and will be operated by the National Council on Senior Citizens.
