Disenfranchisement

The withdrawal of Sen. Bob Kerrey from the Democratic presidential primary (March 5) makes abundantly clear our sense of disenfranchisement here in the West. Our range of choices has been narrowed before we have any say in the matter. The concerns that Paul Tsongas spoke to in New Hampshire, which made him a front-runner, are not necessarily our concerns.
This situation has been going on for several presidential elections, as exemplified especially by Jimmy Carter’s conceding defeat even before the polls closed in the Western time zones. No wonder many people don’t bother to vote.
We would like to see a single-day primary nationwide, with a ban on exit-poll predictions by the media until after all polls are closed.
