Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : FDA Panel Backs Drug to Fight AIDS

The Food and Drug Administration’s advisers recommended approval of the experimental AIDS drug DDC, but only as a supplement to AZT, the most widely used AIDS therapy. The committee voted against using DDC alone, even for patients who cannot tolerate AZT, or the other antiviral drug, DDI. The panel said studies had not shown DDC by itself to be effective. The panel’s recommendations are not binding, but the FDA almost always follows them.
