Umberg Appointed to Commission on Anaheim-Las Vegas Rail Service

Assemblyman Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove) was appointed Thursday to the 16-member California-Nevada Super Speed Ground Transportation Commission.
The panel is charged with finding firms to finance, build and operate a 270-m.p.h. passenger rail service between Anaheim and Las Vegas.
Last year, San Francisco-based Bechtel Corp. resigned from the project, citing financial difficulties.
Umberg, who was picked for the seat by Assembly Speaker Willie Brown (D-San Francisco), replaces Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar), who resigned.
“This is tough duty because we don’t have funding,” Umberg said of his appointment. “Obviously, funding is our top priority.”
Umberg said the bistate commission needs to cast a worldwide net in its search for financing.
