Millions of Butterflies Said to Die Migrating

Millions of monarch butterflies that migrated last winter from Canada to Mexico died because of the destruction of Mexican forests by logging, an environmentalist said Tuesday.

“It was a massive death. The ground was carpeted with butterflies,” said Homero Aridjis, leader of the Group of 100, Mexico’s best-known environmental group.

A full 70% of those that flew from Ontario to their natural habitat in Mexico’s central state of Michoacan died because of deforestation and resulting climate changes, Aridjis said.
