Telling It Like It Is: In London, Gregory Peck presented two young British screenwriters with $20,000 scholarships, which will bring them to California for a year, then told them: “If you long to make superior films, it could be a disheartening experience.” Ann Ogidi and James Wyllie were the first recipients of scholarships provided by the Carl and Eve Foreman Foundation and will spend a year at Cal State Long Beach.

But Peck warned them that major Hollywood studios are “there to grind out product and make a profit. They try not to deal with anything hard to understand or controversial.”
