Monrovia : Council Acts on Budget Gap

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to reduce the city’s General Fund reserves and give smaller raises to city employees next year to close a projected budget gap for 1992-93.
The city’s budget shortfall of more than $500,000 puts Monrovia “in a very precarious position,” Mayor Robert Bartlett said.
Last month, the council agreed to reduce city expenditures by $181,855, including eliminating some recreation programs and cutting some positions.
The city will add $198,200 in revenue by increasing fees and library fines.
The city will save an additional $94,000 by reducing raises and will draw $39,000 from reserves.
The shortfall was blamed on the continuing recession, which has cut into city sales tax revenues.
A final budget proposal is scheduled to be voted on June 16 at the council’s next meeting.
